Drink of the Day: Kalani Wai

This is the greenest drink I've ever made.

Not environmentally conscious, but literally green, as it takes the rare combination of Midori (the neon-green melon liqueur) and green creme de menthe. The only other ingredient is cream, so you get a frothy, thick, minty drink that is shaken cold and then given ice in the glass. It could almost pass for a minty milkshake.

It's also one of the few drinks I've ever tried in which Midori is an afterthought. The ingredients are in equal portions, so I expected the strong sweetness of the Midori to dominate. Not at all. Instead, the mint is the big flavor in the Kalani Wai, and the Midori is just a hint of an afterthought.

That's intriguing, but if you want a minty, creamy drink, have a grasshopper or something of the like. There's really no need for this cocktail at all.

Rating: Three glasses.
